School dropout is a silent and dramatic phenomenon because it often, along with the resulting educational poverty, generates marginalization and sometimes petty crime. Some research for the development of the PNRR - National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (Openpolis Report - With Children) highlights that in 2022 12 percent of Italian students who finished school do not have the minimum basic skills, while 14 percent left school prematurely. Worrisome percentages also increased in recent years due to the pandemic.
The starting point is not the same for everyone, precisely because of social inequality. Attending school, meeting peers, dealing with reference adults helps develop critical thinking and generates opportunities. That is why it is necessary, in all Italian regions, to monitor and plan specific interventions to counter it.
