Our daily commitment against violence against women

Inland in Matara, about 12 kilometers from the coast, Specchio dei tempi built a village soon after the devastating 2004 tsunami. Initially used to provide health care for those who had suffered trauma and fractures, the village includes five family houses, a medical center, and an office facility. However, as the years passed, the needs of the community changed, and Specchio dei tempi, in agreement with the Sri Lankan government and the Matara Juvenile Court, transformed the village into a shelter for girls who had been abused and abandoned.

The village

For more than 12 years, the village has thus been a safe haven for some 20 girls, ages 5 to 18, providing them with a protected environment where they can play, study and grow up peacefully. The girls live in foster homes, supported on a daily basis by Buddhist monks from the Oba Mama Association, led by Reverend Ratanasare, the spiritual leader of southern Sri Lanka. The project, which has been run by the Turin-based NGO MedAcross since January 2025, enjoys a grant from Mirror of the Times. It represents a concrete commitment against violence against women, carried out with daily dedication, not only on symbolic days such as the “red shoes”.

In parallel, for the past five years, Specchio dei tempi and now MedAcross have also been supporting the orphanage in Kekanadura, near Matara, this one run by Buddhist monks under a court mandate. This facility takes in up to 25 children, many under the age of 6, with difficult stories behind them: from those who have lost both parents to illness, to those who have been abandoned due to health problems or forced to live on the streets.
