Since its founding in 1979, the Bartholomew & C. association has assisted, helped and housed hundreds and hundreds of homeless people. Today it takes in 15 of them every night at “The Bivouac,” and another 35 are placed in the 11 lodgings of the “Social Housing” project for varying periods, up to 18 months, in order to accompany them in the most targeted and effective way possible toward autonomy and a true rebirth. It is a major commitment because of the economic resources it requires (renovations, maintenance, utilities, assistance) to which Mirror of the Times assures support.
Help us continue this commitment. With your support we can guarantee more and more homeless people a safe place to restart and rebuild their lives. Every donation, large or small, makes a difference.
That of the association founded by Lia Varesio now more than forty years ago is a history of exclusive service to those who have the street as their home, men and women known one by one with their needs and hopes, followed, supported. And the new project-a central dormitory Lia was thinking of in the last period of her life-was made possible by collaboration with the Camillian Fathers. "With them there is a friendship in the name of the poorest that has distant roots, at the origins of the association. We were already collaborating in the 1980s. It was Father Anthony of the Midian Community who gave us the courage to throw ourselves into the new adventure and also to find the resources for the renovation. By mutual agreement we chose the name: Lia's House," Gremo recalls. Who found in Specchio dei tempi the other important partner in the project.
Overall, it is a world at the center of debates and initiatives, but one that, as Marco, Paola, Elda, Cesare, Matteo, Bartolomeo's operators and volunteers well know, needs responses focused on the individual, so many stories. And indeed at Bartolomeo & C., the dormitory is the first response, along with a change of linen, a shower, sandwiches always ready, and food parcels. Since then, the goal is to offer people orientation to work, accompaniment in bureaucratic paperwork, assistance from street lawyers.
